Get yourself noticed with a Favicon

In business everyone's looking for a way to stand out from the crowd. Successful brands take advantage of any and every opportunity to display their company logo. Those opportunities extend to the web and with the arrival of Internet Explorer 5 Microsoft gave us another place to display our company logos.

What is a Favicon ?

Favicon is short name for "Favorites Icon". The name is derived from the bookmark list for Microsoft Internet Explorer which is called favorites list. When you add a site to your Favorites list, Internet Explorer asks the server if it has a file called favicon.ico. If present, this file will be used to provide an icon that is displayed next to the bookmark text. This is a great way to get people to remember your site among the pile of places they have in their favorites folder.

Favicon was introduced with Internet Explorer 5 by Microsoft but other browsers such as Mozilla have also added support for favicons. Depending on the browser, the favicon can appear in a variety of places, not just in the bookmarks list (in fact, it may not even appear in the bookmark list at all). It may be shown in the address bar or the title of a browser tab, for instance.

Making your Favicon

The required size of a shortcut icon is 16x16 pixels. To create the icon, use an icon editor, such as the one included in Microsoft Visual Studio or one of the many other icon editors available. Another possibility is to take an existing graphic, maybe a BMP or a GIF, and convert it using graphics software. Regardless of the program you use, make sure you set the editor to create an icon that is 16x16 pixels. Otherwise, the icon will be ignored by Internet Explorer. Remember the icon is also limited to a palette of 16 colors.

Placing your Favicon

Rename the icon file exactly to: favicon.ico, all lowercase. No deviation from this is allowed. To have browsers pick up the default favicon.ico, copy it into the root directory, the main directory that holds your HTML pages. If all you want is favicon.ico to be associated with your site, you're done. Every time a visitor bookmark your site with Explorer, favicon.ico is copied to the visitor's cache, where it waits to be displayed. You don't need to alter your HTML.

If you don't have your own domain or you want to use different Favicons for different parts of your site you should place a short line of code in the <head> section of the HTML code of your pages. The code simply tells the browser where to find the icon file. Unlike the previous method the file does not have to be called favicon.ico because this time you are telling the browser exactly which file to look for. It goes a little something like this:

    <link rel="shortcut icon" href="/mypath/myicon.ico">

The code can go anywhere after the <head> tag and before the </head> tag. Remember to change the path and icon filename to correspond to the location of the icon file on your web site.

Testing your new Favicon

After uploading your favicon.ico file and any modified pages you may want may to check it out. To do so, open the favorites menu and choose "Add to Favorites" to see your new icon displayed in the favorites menu. Although a great feature, for some reason favicons don't always work. Sometimes you'll need to close the browser, sometimes you'll need to clean the cache, sometimes you'll need to reboot the system, sometimes you'll simply need to pray, especially if you're using Internet Explorer...

Note, if you change your icon, and people have it bookmarked, their browsers will continue to show your old one. This is only updated if they delete and re-bookmark your site. Something to remember is that if readers clear their cache, your icons can be deleted too. Also, keep in mind some servers don't allow favicons to work, in this case, contact your server administrator..
